University Life

Where to even begin?!

I think it will be easies to set this post out with questions and answer them separately beneath. So here we go...

Were you always going to go to Uni?

Well, I'm actually twenty years old and just finished my first year at LJMU. This is because I decided to take a gap year after my A Levels as I didn't have a clue what to do with my life. Yes...this did scare me, but instead of travelling (due to lack of money 😞) I brought it upon myself to do something useful with my year.

I always knew I wanted to go down the creative root as I studied Media, Photography and Music for my A Levels in Manchester. Therefore, I opted to do an Art Foundation Diploma at the same college that I completed my A Levels at. This made me feel at ease, as I felt too young to go to University...but didn't want to waste a year doing nothing whilst at home.

By the time it came to Christmas I decided to apply to some Universities for Media Production just incase I didn't find an apprenticeship or job for the following year.

To my great amazement I was accepted to all five universities with unconditional offers which I couldn't believe?! I think the fact that I was having an Art Foundation year and already had my A Level results really helped. (So heading straight to uni isn't always as much of a rush as people say!!)

When/where did you start Uni?

I started University last September (2017) at Liverpool John Moores University.

What Universities did you apply too?

  • LJMU
  • Salford
  • Sheffield Hallum
  • Brighton
  • Nottingham Trent

How did you decide on a Uni?

Originally being from Manchester, surprisingly Brighton was my top option for the majority of my year before making my decision. This was due to the City itself! However as it came close to finalising my option...I decided that LJMU offered a much more practical course which I am ALL about. Also, the fact that Liverpool is only an hours train ride away was a benefit. Whereas if I decided to study in Brighton...the whole cost/journey time to travel would have been ridiculous (and if I'm quite honest, I'm far too lazy for that haha).

Starting Uni

When beginning uni in September I remember being SOOO anxious I even had to leave my house before we set off because I was panicking so much. But once I was left in my new accommodation the excitement started to hit me. I met my new flatmates who were all lovely (minus one guy...) and we had an amazing week at freshers!

Freshers

First of all...BE PREPARED!! Endless nights and heavy drinking is ahead of you haha. I don't love drinking, but for freshers I made an exception. Freshers is all about getting to know as many people as you can as everyone's in the same boat as you! Trust me when I say the longer you wait, the harder it will get. This is because everyone starts forming their own groups and I'm the type of person to think I'm being intrusive if people already have their 'group of friends'.

Apres Freshers

After freshers for me was time to focus on my course and getting to know people there. This basically feels like freshers all over again (minus extent amount of drinking haha). It's cool to make friends with people on your course as you obviously have similar subjects of interest and possibly more! Alongside this, when working on projects or essays its always nice to have friends to help you along the way as they can relate to what you're going through😊.

Hobbies at uni

I personally haven't joined any societies at uni as I don't have the time, but everyone I know who has LOVES it!! So definitely check it out if you get the chance too. some of my hobbies at uni include, going to the gym multiple times in the week (I find it great for stress relief) also photography and going out for food/drinks 🍲

I don't want to make this post too long...so if you guys have anymore questions you'd like me to answer about uni life then feel free to drop me a message or in the comments section!

Lots of love,

Em x
